Signs of a Home Electrical Problem

Sometimes homeowners just shrug off symptoms of electrical problems and wait until a major damage takes place. When this happens, the family’s safety becomes at risk and at the same time expenses for the repair gets bigger.

In view of this, the San Diego Electrician’s Association (SDEA) is calling on homeowners to take a more pro-active approach when it comes to dealing with electrical issues. The SDEA says, a breaker that keeps on tripping, or a flickering light, or fluctuating electricity, should never be ignored. They added, these may even cost homeowners their lives as electrical fires are the top reason for home fires.

Third-Party service ratings website Angie’s List came up with a list of electrical issues that could signify a major electrical problem at home. One of the items discussed in the article is burning odor or sparks emanating from electrical fixtures.

“If you notice a burning odor coming from any outlets or switches, turn the power off at the electrical panel. Contact a qualified electrician for appropriate repairs. The problem may be a faulty device, but it could also be a wiring or overload problem. A burning smell is a serious issue because it could indicate the start of an electrical fire. Receptacles or connected electrical cords that are warm to the touch are also a sign of an electrical problem. Do not use the receptacle until the situation has been repaired.”

Bothersome electrical issue

Safebee.com also shared a list of electrical issues that should never be ignored. In their article they emphasized calling in a licensed electrician to help assess the possible problem and address it right away. One of the signs that should never be ignored according to their list is frequently tripping breakers.

“Circuit breakers and fuses are designed to fail as a way to prevent overloading. If a vacuum cleaner or hair dryer routinely trips a breaker regardless of where you plug it in, the appliance is the likely culprit. But if using a single outlet causes you to blow the same fuse repeatedly, the circuit is probably overloaded. Call in a pro to discuss upgrading the circuit or adding a new line.”

Warning Signs

In their article they underscored the importance of calling for professional help right away to avoid bigger problems and possible accidents.

One of the signs mentioned in their write-up is irregularities in the lighting fixtures.

“Flickering or dimming lights often indicate one or more poor connections in your home's electrical system. At these spots, arcing may produce heat that can then ignite combustible materials. Since wiring is inside your home's walls, there are a number of materials that can catch fire, such as wallboard and wood framing. If you notice your lights flickering and dimming, make a note of where it is occurring and contact a professional.”
